Remember when the day AFTER Thanksgiving used to be the start of the Christmas shopping season? Now it seems the day after LABOR DAY is when the stores all bring out the Christmas decorations and we start seeing Christmas ads on TV.
And while many people think of Thanksgiving Day as a time to eat until we're about to burst, then fall asleep on the couch watching football, let's pause a few moments to remember the real reason for Thanksgiving.
As you remember from your 1st grade history, the first Thanksgiving was because the Pilgrims were happy they had survived their first year in the New World, including the previous awful winter season, had made peaceful friendships with the local Native Americans, and were having a feast to give thanks for their "blessings".
Think about this for a moment; Here we have a group of people who were THANKFUL that most of them had lived through the past year (remember, this was the 1600's, before modern medicine could cure most illnesses), had busted their backs plowing, planting, cultivating, and harvesting their own food they had grown (no mega-markets back then...), making their own clothing, building their own houses, and trying to carve a living out of the wilderness.
How many of us could do that nowadays? Some probably could, but because of the advances and conveniences of modern life we don't have to. And because of that, some people have forgotten to be thankful for even the basics they have. For many people, Thanksgiving Day is just the day before the biggest shopping day of the year with great prices on stuff if you get there before 10:00 a.m...
How often do we pause and appreciate the fact that we have a roof over our heads, a warm bed to sleep in at night, adequate clothing, enough food so we don't go to bed hungry, and our families and loved ones to gather with us?
So perhaps we should all take a few moments to realize how lucky we are for, as the Founding Fathers of our country put it, "The blessings our Creator has bestowed upon us", because there are many, MANY here at home and around the world who would be thrilled to bits at having even a pittance of what we have.
And while we're at it, let's not forget those brave men and women in uniform who everyday put themselves in harm's way to defend those Blessings and Freedoms we enjoy under the Blanket of Freedom provided by the United States of America.

How cool is that??? Apparently people are starting to hear about us to where there have been enough Internet searches to put VWS on the map.
